Sprained ankle occurs when excessive force impacts the ankle bones, twisting, stretching or tearing the ligaments around the bone. The severity of the sprain determines the nature and length of the treatment. If left untreated, sprained ankle can lead to long-term damage.
Causes
Sprained ankle is a common sports injury. During athletic activity, strenuous activity may lead to collisions, jumps, or other movements that impact the ankle with considerable force. The condition can be avoided by building balance, strength and flexibility in the foot through proper exercise, stretching routines and athletic shoes.
Treatments
Dr. Marso will direct patients to rest and elevate the ankle, applying ice to reduce any swelling that results. Compressive bandages may be used to keep the foot immobile during healing. More serious cases may involve surgery to repair damaged ligaments.
