Plantar Fasciitis (Heel Spur)

The term plantar fasciitis refers to heel or foot pain associated with inflammation at the bottom of the foot. This inflammation is linked to overpronation.

Causes

Plantar fasciitis occurs when the plantar fascia, the connective tissue that stretches from the base of the toes to the heel bone, becomes overly stretched. As the foot rolls inward, it flattens and stretches the arch, putting the plantar fascia under severe tension. This tension causes the inflammation and pain associated with plantar fasciitis.

Treatments

Dr. Marso may choose one or more of numerous care options for plantar fasciitis. While surgical treatments exist, often the condition responds well to conservative treatments such as:

  • Anti-inflammatory medications.
  • Ice packs.
  • Stretching exercises.
  • Orthotic inserts.
  • Physical therapy.

In some cases, Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT), a non-invasive sonar procedure, may be used to stimulate healing of the plantar fascia.
