Hammer Toes

Hammertoe occurs when the second, third, or fourth toes of the foot become deformed. The affected toe bends at the middle joint to resemble a hammer. If this painful condition is left untreated, it may require surgery.

Causes

Hammertoe results from improperly-fitting shoes or from a muscle imbalance inside the foot.

Treatment

To relieve hammertoe, Dr. Marso may prescribe soft, roomy shoes and a variety of exercises to retrain the toe muscles. In some cases he may order strap, cushions, or certain types of corn pads as part of the treatment plan. The most severe cases may require surgery.
