Bone Spurs

Bone spurs are tiny extensions of bone that develop on the heel, near the toes, or on the big toe joint. Though bone spurs may be painful, they are generally harmless.

When bone spurs occur in the heel area, they are known as heel spurs. This particular type of spur is most likely to appear under or on top of the heel bone, near the area where the plantar fibrous bands connect.

Causes

Bone spurs are the body’s way of combating excessive friction or stress against a bone over long periods of time. Activities such as running and dancing often result in the growth of spurs, as do ill-fitting shoes and excessive weight bearing. Bone spurs may also develop as part of the aging process.

Treatments

Dr. Marso may recommend a variety of options for treating bone spurs. For spurs in the heel area, simple exercises and properly-fitting athletic shoes may be prescribed to lessen strain on the plantar fibrous band.

Other forms may be treated through anti-inflammatory medications, cortisone injections, and/or orthotic inserts. In severe cases, surgery may be necessary.
