Morton’s Neuroma is an enlarged, benign growth of tissue surrounding the nerves that lead to the third and fourth toes. Common symptoms of Morton’s Neuroma include burning pain from the ball of the foot to the toes, or numbness.
Causes
Morton’s Neuroma may result from sustained wearing of high-heeled or narrow shoes, or from foot trauma. Some cases also result from an abnormality in foot shape.
Treatment
Dr. Marso treats Morton’s Neuroma with one of the following conservative treatments:
- Roomier, low-heeled shoes
- Orthotic inserts
- Corticosteriod injections
In cases of chronic pain, outpatient surgery may be recommended. A non-surgical procedure called neurolysis may also be used, in which the affected nerve is destroyed through a series of ethanol injections.
